Clean Energy Fuels and Maas Energy Works, a leading dairy digester developer, have joined forces to develop nine renewable natural gas (RNG) production facilities at dairy farms across seven states in the US, they said on May 14.

The initiative will involve dairies located in Colorado, South Dakota, Georgia, Florida, Iowa, Nebraska, and New Mexico, collectively representing a step in mitigating methane emissions. By collecting manure from a combined herd size of approximately 35,000 cows, the project aims to prevent methane emissions from entering the atmosphere, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Each of the nine projects, subject to finalising diligence before commencing construction, is slated for completion by 2026. Together, these facilities are expected to produce up to an estimated 4 million gallons/year of RNG, which will be integrated into Clean Energy's nationwide network of RNG stations. Financed by Clean Energy, the total investment for the nine sites is forecasted to be approximately $130mn.

Agriculture accounts for nearly 10% of US GHG emissions and the transportation sector accounts for another 28%, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.
