Texas-based Darling Ingredients announced on 5 June plans to reduce emissions from its wastewater treatment plants at select rendering facilities by capturing biogas and converting it to renewable natural gas (RNG) in partnership with RNG producer GreenGasUSA.

The initial phase will begin with five Darling Ingredients plants in the US, with the potential to expand to other facilities depending on feasibility and market conditions.

Darling Ingredients operates over 260 facilities in more than 15 countries, processing about 15% of the world's animal agricultural by-products. The company also produces about 30% of the world's collagen (both gelatin and hydrolysed collagen) and is one of the largest producers of renewable energy.

"By combining our deep knowledge of RNG from our position in Europe with the capabilities of GreenGas in the US, Darling can significantly decrease its greenhouse gas emissions and help develop a successful RNG business in the US,” said Randall C. Stuewe, CEO of Darling Ingredients.

GreenGasUSA partners with businesses to reduce their environmental footprint by producing RNG and other renewable products, such as carbon dioxide, clean water, and agricultural nutrients. The company offers solutions including biogas capture, anaerobic digestion, gas flaring, compression, transportation, and pipeline injection, and it has operational RNG facilities at agricultural and food processing sources across the US.
