Hyundai Engineering & Construction announced on July 3 the completion of the Siheung Clean Energy Center, Korea’s first private integrated biogas facility.

The Siheung Clean Energy Center is an integrated treatment facility for sewage sludge, food waste, and excrement located in the Siheung Water Environment Center in Gyeonggi Province. It processes organic wastes, including 540 m3/day of sewage sludge, 145 m3/day of food waste, and 60 m3/day of excrement generated in Siheung City. The facility enhances treatment stability through waste reduction and energy conversion while producing biogas.

Construction of the project began in March 2021 and was completed late last month. The facility began full-scale production and supply of city gas on the day of completion and will be operated by Hyundai Engineering & Construction for the next 20 years.

The biogas produced is refined in a purification facility, generating approximately 4.6mn Nm3/year of city gas. This amount can supply around 8,283 households/day and is distributed throughout Siheung City.

Additionally, the Chungju Food Bioenergy Center, also built and operated by Hyundai Engineering & Construction, produces hydrogen from biogas extracted from food waste and supplies it to a nearby hydrogen fusion charging station.

Hyundai Engineering & Construction is also involved in projects like the Gumi City Wide Area Integrated Biogasification Facility Private Investment Project and the Inje Integrated Biogas Energy Facility National Project.
