Japanese shipping major NYK and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at the sustainable development of the maritime industry, NYK announced on July 9.

With climate change goals set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and others in mind, NYK will cooperate with MPA on various initiatives, including the promotion of clean ammonia as marine fuel and training programmes for crew members on ammonia-fuelled vessels. NYK will also work to promote the use of various biofuels and synthetic fuels, including methanol and methane.

NYK and MPA will exchange knowledge to accelerate investment in decarbonisation and explore collaboration on human resource development training, including leadership programmes, with the aim of cultivating maritime talent in Singapore.

The Port of Singapore is in the introduction phase of alternative fuels such as methanol, hydrogen, and ammonia, a derivative of hydrogen. “We hope that this collaboration will unlock the potential of both parties and create solutions that can contribute to the sustainable development of the maritime industry,” said Teo Eng Dih, chairman of the MPA.

Takaya Soga, CEO of NYK Line, said, “Regarding ammonia, we support the Singapore government's initiative and have begun concrete business development, such as bunkering, for its use as marine fuel. As the world's largest hub port for transhipment and bunkering, Singapore plays a very important role in the maritime industry and is a world leader in various fields.”
