Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation has signed a contract to supply oil country tubular goods (OCTG) pipes to Qatar Energy, the state-owned energy company of Qatar, it said on June 14.

The OCTG pipes, manufactured by Nippon Steel Corporation, will be used in the construction of a blue ammonia production plant in the Mesaieed region of Qatar, a project led by Qatar Energy. The supply volume for this project is approximately 1,000 tonnes, marking the first order for OCTG pipes by a Japanese company for a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in the Middle East.

Qatar Energy is actively involved in natural gas supply, ammonia production, and CCS projects aimed at decarbonisation. The blue ammonia plant project will produce ammonia by separating CO₂ from methane gas emitted from the Mesaieed region, one of Qatar's most industrialised areas, and storing the CO₂ underground. The plant will have a production capacity of 1.2mn tonnes/year.

This initiative is part of Qatar Energy's broader efforts to advance sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions.
