Var Energi announced on May 27 that it has joined the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Oil & Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0).

The OGMP 2.0 programme, a flagship initiative of UNEP, serves as a measurement-based reporting framework that provides public assurance regarding the responsible handling of methane emissions by participating companies.

“We are accelerating our decarbonisation plan to maintain relevance and investability long term. This includes targeting methane emissions in 2024 to be near zero,” said Ellen Waldeland Hoddell, EVP of safety and sustainability at Var Energi.

“For the first quarter of 2024, the methane emission intensity for Var Energi was 0.02% of exported gas from operated assets, which is far below the industry target of 0.2% by 2025. Nevertheless, further reduction is a key part of the road map we use as a guide in the effort to cut greenhouse gas emissions,” Hoddell added.
