Parana's gas company Companhia Paranaense de Gas (Compagas) announced on June 25 that it will invest 505mn reais ($92.6mn) over the next five years (2024-2029) to expand its presence in the natural gas and biomethane sectors in the state.

This investment is part of Compagas' new concession contract, effective from July, which sets targets for increasing the supply of natural gas and biomethane and extending services to new regions in Parana over the next 30 years.

The company plans to expand its operations to additional regions within the state, specifically targeting the municipalities of Londrina, Maringa, and Lapa. A key aspect of the expansion includes integrating biomethane into the state's piped gas network.

Approximately 100mn reais will be allocated to expand the piped gas network in Londrina and Maringa. This project involves constructing a 60 km network to cater to the industrial, residential, commercial, and vehicular segments in northern Parana.

An investment of 108mn reais will go towards building a 52 km gas pipeline between the municipalities of Araucaria and Lapa. This pipeline will serve the agro-industrial corridor in the state, notably benefiting the Grupo Potencial factory.

Compagas has also entered into a contract with waste management company H2A for the inclusion of biomethane in the gas distribution network in Parana, aiming to supply 20,000 m³/day starting from July 2025.

Furthermore, the company will commence operations of the first route of the Parana Sustainable Corridor, connecting Londrina and Paranagua. This route will facilitate refuelling of light and heavy vehicles with compressed natural gas (CNG) and biomethane.
